Every app here calls itself free. The word is doing a lot of work. Some give you genuine daily access with no card. Others show you a character grid, let you send a handful of messages, then wall you off mid-conversation.
This page gives you the actual numbers, tested from an Aussie IP. Where I know the exact limit, it's stated. Where I don't, I say so rather than guessing.
Which free tiers are real, and which are bait
The single most useful table on this page. "What breaks first" is the thing that will actually stop you.

What hitting the wall looks like
Free-tier limits are usually described in the abstract. Here is one in practice. Ask a companion on Nastia's free plan for a selfie and it will offer one, enthusiastically, in the chat. Say yes and you get this instead:
Note what is happening in the exchange. The AI initiates: "Do you want me to send you a pic?" The refusal doesn't come from the character, it comes from the billing layer, after the character has already said yes. That is the mechanic behind most "free" tiers in this category, and it is why the SERP is full of people asking which ones are real.
To be fair to Nastia, the modal is honest about what it's selling and the paid plans are cheap for what they include. Plenty of platforms here are far more aggressive. But this is the moment your free tier ends, and no competitor guide shows it.
The pattern worth internalising: the apps with the most generous free tiers are the ones that aren't selling you a girlfriend. Character.AI is free and unlimited because it's a fandom roleplay platform with a content filter. The apps built around romance and NSFW give you ten messages and a paywall, because that's the product.
The three Google recommends, and what it leaves out
Search "best free AI girlfriend" from Australia and Google's AI Overview names Character.AI, Replika and Nastia AI. All three are real, all three have genuine free access, and the summary skips something important about each one.
Character.AI, free and unlimited, but filtered
The biggest free option by a distance, and the one most likely to disappoint anyone who arrived here from a search with "girlfriend" in it.
It loads in a browser from Australia with no geo-block. You need an account, Google, Apple or email, and sign-up takes about ten seconds. Then you're into a library the site advertises as 10M+ characters.
The free tier is genuinely generous. Basic chat models, unlimited messaging, no card. What you don't get, straight from the upgrade screen: better memory, ad-free chats, the latest models, no slow mode, unlimited voice calls, and chat customisation. Those sit behind c.ai+ at $9.99/month (~AU$14) or $94.99/year (~AU$11.50/month equivalent).
The catch nobody mentions in the AI Overview: Character.AI does not allow adult content. The filter is strict and well documented, and the platform surface is anime and fandom roleplay, Attack on Titan, My Hero Academia, boarding school scenarios. If what you want is a romantic or NSFW companion, this is the wrong product no matter how free it is.
Replika, app-only, and the renewal is the story
Replika is the most established name here, advertising over 42 million users. It's also app-only: the website is a download page for iOS and Android, not a product. There is no browser version, which rules it out if you're looking for something you can open in a tab.
There's a free tier, and the paid plans use a pattern worth flagging. The one-month plan shows $19.75, discounted from $39.50. The fine print underneath: "You will be automatically charged $19.75 after the payment confirmation. The subscription will then be auto-renewed monthly after a 1-month intro offer at the full price of $39.50."
So the advertised price applies once. Month two is $39.50 (~AU$56.50), which is more than double, and more than almost anything else in this category. The yearly plan at $69.63 (~AU$99) is the only version that's competitively priced. Payments are in USD.
Nastia, the uncensored one
The least known of the three and the most relevant to what people actually search for here. Nastia runs a limited free plan with a starting token allowance, and unlike Character.AI it doesn't filter adult content.
Paid plans are annual and cheap by this category's standards: Basic at $87.95/year (~AU$125, about $7.33/month) gets 200 daily tokens, two companions, voice messages, AI pictures and videos. Unlimited at $99.95/year (~AU$142, about $8.33/month) gets unlimited messages, 400 daily tokens, five companions, voice cloning, and uncensored pictures and video up to 4K.
Tokens roll over and don't expire, which is unusual and genuinely consumer-friendly. Nastia also states plainly on its checkout: no hidden fees, no auto-upsells, cancel anytime. After looking at Replika's renewal terms and Get-Harder's, that's worth something.

Free tiers that are really demos
These aren't scams. They're previews, and it's worth knowing that before you invest an evening in one.
- Luvr.AI, 10 messages a day. No image generation, no NSFW, no voice, no video. Enough to judge whether the conversation is any good and nothing else. To Luvr's credit, paid is cheap (~AU$8.50/month on 12 months) and it offers a 30-day guarantee, the most generous refund window in this category.
- GirlfriendGPT, around 15 to 20 messages total. No NSFW, no images. You'll hit the wall in one sitting.
- Candy.ai, essentially an interface tour. Free access mostly shows you what the product looks like. If Candy is where you're heading anyway, its 12-month plan is A$5.99/month billed in Australian dollars, the cheapest paid option covered on this site.
- Kupid.AI, free browsing and limited chats. Fine for judging character style. Be careful with the paid side: Kupid quotes per week, and $12.99 a week is about AU$80 a month.
What no free tier gets you
Across every platform tested, these sit behind payment without exception:
- Uncensored or NSFW content. Character.AI won't allow it at any price. Everyone else gates it.
- Meaningful image generation. A handful of free credits at most, then a wall.
- Video generation. Universally paid.
- Voice calls. Paid everywhere, including Character.AI's c.ai+.
- Memory that lasts. Free tiers forget. On Character.AI, "better memory" is explicitly a paid feature.

Free tiers and the Online Safety Act
Free access is where age verification is thinnest. Most platforms here use a self-declaration tick or a single button click before letting you in, and several have no gate at all on the free tier.
Character.AI requires an account, which is a mild form of friction rather than verification. Replika inherits Apple and Google's app store age ratings. The browser-based adult platforms mostly rely on you clicking a button that says you're 18.
