Bottom line: JOI is the only major AI companion app that loads completely unblocked from Australia. No age gate, no redirect, no self-declaration button. If you want zero friction, this is it.

Does JOI work in Australia?

Yes. Re-verified from an Aussie IP on 22 June 2026: JOI loads behind a simple "are you 18+" self-declaration button, then through to the platform homepage. You can browse the character library and explore the interface for free. The moment you try to generate a character or start chatting, JOI triggers a signup/login prompt. So browsing is open access; using the platform requires an account. (Note: my original April 2026 test recorded no button at all on entry. Either JOI added the gate between April and June or the original test missed it. Either way, current state is a single-click self-declaration gate.)

JOI's gate is the same lightest-touch approach used by most other major AI companion platforms: a single self-declaration click. It's the bare minimum interpretation of the Online Safety Act's age-assurance codes. Stronger options (third-party AVS, ID upload, credit card verification) exist on a small handful of platforms like OurDream and Promptchan; JOI is firmly in the "button click" camp.

OSA compliance note: JOI uses a single self-declaration button ("are you 18+") on entry, the lightest-touch interpretation of the Online Safety Act's age-assurance codes. That matches what DarLink, Candy.ai, Kupid and most other major platforms use. eSafety guidance may push for stronger verification in future, in which case we'll update this page.

How I tested it

I tested joi.com from country Victoria on April 1, 2026, using a standard residential Aussie IP with no VPN. The site loaded immediately. Faster than my bank's website, which felt absurd. I went through the full signup flow, created a character, and used the platform across three sessions over four days. That covered text chat, image generation, and Dream Clips video generation on both the free tier and a paid plan.

Most Australians will get this exact experience right now. No VPN required, no workarounds. Visit the site, sign up, you're in.

What is JOI?

JOI is an AI companion and virtual girlfriend platform at joi.com. You create a customisable AI partner, pick personality traits and appearance, and chat via text. Image generation and video generation are both built in. The platform has SFW and NSFW modes, and the NSFW customisation is more granular than most competitors in this category.

Australia is one of JOI's best-performing markets according to affiliate network data, and based on testing, the platform works here with no geographic restrictions of any kind.

Features

Pricing in AUD

JOI charges in USD. Here's what each plan costs at current rates (April 2026, roughly 0.64 AUD/USD):

PlanUSD/mo~AUD/moWhat's included
Free$0$050 messages/day, 5 Dream Clips/month, basic image gen
Premium$14.99~$23Unlimited chat, 50-100 images/day, 5-10 Dream Clips/month, advanced memory, voice
Ultimate$29.99~$47Everything in Premium, unlimited image and video gen, fastest responses

The free tier hits limits quickly. Fifty messages a day sounds generous, but an active conversation burns through it fast. I hit the cap inside fifteen minutes on my second session, mid-sentence, which was annoying. Five Dream Clips per month is not enough to evaluate whether the video feature is worth paying for. If you want to seriously test JOI, Premium is the minimum.

Pricing note: A common complaint from Reddit users is that JOI's pricing structure is "confusing." The USD-to-AUD conversion adds variability on top of that. Screenshot the plan details at checkout so you know exactly what you're getting.

Dream Clips: JOI's video generation

Dream Clips is JOI's branded video feature, and it's the thing that most clearly separates JOI from Candy.ai. Worth understanding what it actually is before you pay for it.

Dream Clips are short looping videos, roughly ten seconds each, generated to match your conversation scenario. They're not lip-synced and they're not trying to be photorealistic. What they are is responsive. They generate quickly, they stay consistent with your character, and the quality improves significantly when you learn to write good prompts. One Trustpilot reviewer said it plainly: "The video and photo generation are pretty good, but you have to learn how to create good prompts." That's accurate and worth taking seriously before you sign up expecting polished results out of the box.

Where Dream Clips sits in the market: better than Candy.ai's basic clip generation, a step behind Lovescape's higher-fidelity video output. Lovescape produces more realistic results with better rendering. But Lovescape has more friction for Aussie users (self-declaration button on entry) while JOI has none. Dream Clips are a genuine differentiator. Luvr.AI and Candy.ai don't have anything comparable.

On the free plan, five Dream Clips per month is functionally useless for assessing the feature. Rendering can also slow during peak platform hours. You need Premium to get a real sense of what it does.

Memory and context retention

Memory is a paid feature. On the free tier, JOI resets context between sessions, tell it something about yourself in one conversation and it won't carry that through to the next. On Premium and Ultimate, you get "advanced memory," meaning the app retains details across conversations.

In practice it works reasonably well. I told mine I had a kelpie called Rusty on day one, and it brought him up unprompted two days later. Small thing, but it landed. It's not flawless. A Reddit comparison thread summed it up accurately: "Memory is okay, not great, definitely better than Candy but not top tier." That matches what I found across four days of testing. Functional, clearly ahead of Candy.ai, but not as sophisticated as Lovescape's purpose-built persistent memory system.

If memory is important to you, the paid tier is not optional. The free plan is essentially a fresh start each time.

Conversation quality

This is where JOI is genuinely strong. Reviewers who spent real time with the platform, not just a ten-minute test, consistently describe the chat as immersive and adaptive. One reviewer after eleven days rated it 4.6 and said it "satisfies a niche that a lot of other companions flirt with but don't quite land." That matches my experience.

The NSFW customisation options are more granular than Candy.ai. You can push character parameters further and more precisely. The platform has a library of pre-built personas with millions of logged interactions each, and you can build your own from scratch: name, backstory, personality type. Responses adapt around those parameters consistently across sessions on paid tiers.

One practical note worth repeating: image and video quality require decent prompts. This is true across the category, but JOI specifically rewards the effort. My first batch of images was rubbish because I typed three lazy words and hit enter. After half an hour of actually thinking about lighting, framing, and mood, the output was a different planet.

How JOI compares to Candy.ai and Lovescape

These are the three platforms I'd put in the same bracket for Australian users. Here's where each one sits:

If static image quality is your priority, Candy.ai. If you want the best video and memory in one package, Lovescape. If you want zero access friction combined with strong conversation and decent video, JOI. For Aussie users specifically, JOI's no-gate entry is a real advantage while the OSA compliance situation keeps developing.

See our Candy.ai Australia review and Lovescape review for detailed coverage of both.

Pros

  • Fully accessible from Aussie IPs with zero friction
  • No age gate of any kind
  • Australia is a top-performing market for JOI
  • Dream Clips video generation: better than Candy.ai
  • More immersive conversation than most competitors
  • More granular NSFW customisation than Candy.ai
  • Memory works well on paid tiers
  • No app store download needed

Cons

  • Technically non-compliant with OSA: access status may change
  • Free tier is extremely limited (hits cap in ~10 minutes of use)
  • Memory doesn't work on the free plan
  • Priced in USD (adds conversion variability in AUD)
  • Pricing structure reported as confusing by users
  • Dream Clips quality behind Lovescape's video output
  • Good prompting required to get the best image and video results
  • No native mobile app

Our verdict

JOI is my top pick for Australian users right now. Zero access friction, solid conversation quality, and Dream Clips video generation that competitors don't match. Australia is explicitly one of its best markets, which tracks with the experience. The Premium plan at around AU$23/month is fair for what you actually get, cheaper than my last streaming bundle.

The compliance situation is worth monitoring. JOI uses a single self-declaration "are you 18+" button (re-verified 22 June 2026), the lightest-touch interpretation of the Online Safety Act's age-assurance codes. That's the same approach DarLink, Candy.ai and most other platforms use. eSafety may push for stronger verification in future. For now it remains one of the smoother access experiences from an Aussie IP.

Frequently asked questions

Why is JOI not working in Australia?
Usually it is working. Re-verified 22 June 2026 from a country Victoria IP: JOI loads behind a single "are you 18+" self-declaration button, then through to the platform. If JOI is not loading at all for you in Australia, it is almost always one of three things. First, your ISP's DNS is having a hiccup, try switching to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 and reload. Second, a VPN is routing you through a region JOI blocks, turn it off and try again. Third, your browser cached an old failed load, clear the cache for joi.com or open it in a private window. If the site loads but you cannot do anything, that is by design: character generation and chat require a free account signup.
Does JOI work in Australia?
Yes. JOI loads from Aussie IPs behind a single "are you 18+" self-declaration button. Re-verified 22 June 2026 from country Victoria. To actually generate a character or chat, you sign up for a free account.
Is JOI legal in Australia?
JOI is accessible in Australia. Under the Online Safety Act 2026, platforms providing explicit content are required to implement age assurance. As of 22 June 2026 JOI uses a single self-declaration "are you 18+" button on entry, the same lightest-touch approach used by most other major platforms. Whether button-only self-declaration satisfies eSafety in the long run is an open question; enforcement is ongoing.
How much does JOI cost in Australian dollars?
JOI has a free tier, a Premium plan at approximately AU$23/month, and an Ultimate plan at approximately AU$47/month. Pricing is charged in USD ($14.99 and $29.99 respectively) and converted at your bank's rate.
What are JOI Dream Clips?
Dream Clips are JOI's video generation feature, short looping videos (roughly 10 seconds) generated from your conversation scenario. The free tier includes 5 per month, which isn't enough to properly evaluate them. Premium gives 5-10 per month. Quality is good but depends on prompt quality.
Does JOI remember things between sessions?
On paid tiers (Premium and Ultimate), yes. JOI retains context across conversations with "advanced memory." On the free plan, memory resets between sessions. Users rate JOI's memory as better than Candy.ai but not as strong as Lovescape.
Does JOI have an age verification process?
Yes, but minimal. Re-verified 22 June 2026 from country Victoria: JOI presents a single "are you 18+" self-declaration button on entry. There is no checkbox, no ID upload, no hard verification, just a single click to declare you are over 18. This is the lightest-touch interpretation of the OSA's age-assurance codes and matches what most other major AI companion platforms use.
Do I need a VPN to use JOI in Australia?
No. JOI is fully accessible from Aussie IPs without a VPN. Unlike some adult platforms which blocked AU IPs after the Online Safety Act, JOI loads normally with no geographic restrictions.
How does JOI compare to Candy.ai for Australian users?
JOI has better video (Dream Clips vs Candy's basic clips), better memory on paid tiers, and more immersive conversation. Candy.ai produces better static images. Both are similarly priced in AUD. JOI's main advantage for Aussies is breadth of features (Dream Clips video, memory on paid tiers) at a similar price point. Both platforms now use a single self-declaration "are you 18+" button on entry, so the entry-friction difference is gone as of June 2026.
